Really 3.5 stars. I had a good time reading this book. It's a great concept and Shaffer's taking the bromance memes of Obama/Biden pix and turning them into a mystery series was a brilliant move. The Holmes/Watson or Spock/Kirk or Felix/Oscar component to the pairing just works. That said, and as enjoyable as I found this read, there was something annoyingly off (for me) about the Biden 'voice'. Maybe too much 'corn' as in 'hick' and not enough 'goof'. He is not an uneducated man, though he might not have Obama's ivy creds (and might be a bit touchy about he gap), but Shaffer depicts him as all emotion with little head. Personally, I think he's a bit more Columbo than Shaffer realizes. Also, there's a genuine goodness to Biden that only comes across at fleeting moments here. Still, if Shaffer is taking advice, I'm looking forward to another adventure -- maybe one in which former FLOTUS and SLOTUS (?) join their spouses in sleuthing. And my final peeve -- the only one I can't get past -- I just can't buy a characterization of Jill Biden (who was an English major and has an Ed.D. in reading) where she reads Harlequin romances. Did I miss an interview where she confesses this as a guilty pleasure? If so, I apologize to Shaffer --- but if not, it's part of the patronizing of the Bidens that mars this otherwise fun book.

Hope Never Dies An Obama Biden Mystery Obama Biden Mysteries Book 1 edition by Andrew Shaffer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I've read that Mr. Shaffer plans to write a series of Obama/Biden mysteries. For me, one will be enough. I'm OK that the concept is absurd, but IMVHO the book isn't humorous or even interesting. The plot isn't very interesting, the dialogue (largely expressing Mr. Biden's anguish about growing old and that his buddy Barack has moved on to other things, and Mr. Obama's cool) is stupid, and there's just very little that's appealing. At it's best the book is silly, but nothing more; and the silly part doesn't validate the rest of the book. Or the money I spent to buy it. Or the time it took to read it.
I wish this was really true...that Joe was jealously moping about Barack's escapades and when they finally reunite, it's like the puzzle pieces fall neatly into place.
If you can suspend reality (there's no WAY anyone in DE would not recognize Joe) this is a fun bit of fantasy. I imagine this is a nearly perfect portrayal of the relationship between both Joe and BO AND Joe and Dr. Biden. A little fear, a lot of fan boy and the most ridiculous devotion to both of them. I love how much Delaware touchpoints were included (the train station, the News Journal, his love of Amtrak). True there was some nonsense (cows in North Wilm??) but that could be forgiven, when Capriottis made an appearance.

I can't wait to read the next installment. Hopefully it till motivate these two to sign a movie deal...or at least a late night show. Hope never dies, babe!
This is a surprisingly good summer mystery, well-written with unexpected twists and turns. I enjoyed the banter between the two protagonists, and the way the author "got" their personalities. It's more thoughtful and serious than I expected for a light-hearted romp. I recommend it highly.
Okay, let's not expect this to be a piece of literary fiction. Yes, the book is totally what he claims to be a mystery written in the formula of so many mystery writers. So for those you have given it a one star, maybe you don't exactly know what "irony" is when you see it as well as "satire" when you read it. But I do--and this book is very funny, and probably even more so for those who live in and around Wilmington, Delaware, where Joe Biden lives and not far from where I too live (recently so having moved from Miami Beach). The plot is silly because that is exactly what it must be when doing irony. The last thing you expect--here's the irony!--is for Number Forty-four (Obama) to be Joe Biden's underling in a detective story. There are wonderful, usually rather subtle, comments related to those eight years when we had a thoughtful President and his sometimes off-script side kick, the VP. So for those of you, like me, would buy the book just for the cover and then have it out in a prominent place--your coffee table maybe--do so. The chapters are, of course, short. And naturally these two guys go down wrong paths. There are car chases--of course there are--and mistaken identities. Well, you know what I mean if you've ever read a mystery written to a formula just as some of loved the formula writing of our earliest novel, i.e., Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys mysteries.
This was a fun read. Shaffer gives us just enough realism about Joe and Barack that the rest of the book doesn't seem ridiculous and you can willingly suspend disbelief. It's a fast read and a fun read. Great for a trip, preferably on Amtrak, or something to escape the headlines of the real world. I also give him credit for getting most of his railroad technical information correct. Worth a read if you're looking for a good time.
I was torn between 4 and 5 stars because honestly, this isn't the best book ever written or even in my top 100. As far as the detective stuff goes the plot is minor and by the numbers. However, this may be the best book ever narrated by a fictional Joe Biden so there's that. Also given the times we live in, I really NEEDED to read this book about two totally decent humans, who love each other, and are brave and true and get things done. If Schaffer writes another in the series I'll probably read it too.
OK, people are going to have opinions on this book solely because of the characters. It's too bad because it's a fun read. It's like a cozy mystery with a political bent. Biden and Obama team up to figure out how an Amtrak conductor died. Was it suicide by train or a nefarious plot that goes much deeper.

The banter between the two protagonists had me giggling like a little girl all the way through this book. Yes, I was fans when they were in the White House so I already had one foot in the door to accepting this wild and far fetched premise. Bottom line is that this is a well crafted and engaging mystery. In the end that's what you're looking for in a good summer read.
