The Resolutions Mia Garcia Books

This book is so underrated but so so good! It follows 4 latinx characters, half of them are queer. There's anxiety rep, a girl struggling about possibly having the Huntington's gene. And amazing friendship. I can't recommend it enough!

The Resolutions Mia Garcia Books Reviews

The Resolutions is the YA book of your dreams. Thank you Mia Garcia for bringing this one into the world! Y'all this book is SO GOOD, get one for yourself and one for your favorite high schooler.

Follow 4 best friends through a year in their lives, from New Years Eve to New Years Eve. This is a group with a lot of love one another. It's near impossible not to care about them when they care so much for each other. Highly recommended for anyone in the mood for a YA contemporary with friends, food, and family.

I was obsessed with how Jess' storyline really turned the "say yes to everything" idea on it's head. Anyone who has seen a movie or a TV show where a character has had to say yes to everything has an idea of how that plays out, but Garcia makes it so realistic in the way that would actually go down for a high schooler.

Lee's storyline was probably my favorite because I'm a sucker for a romance, especially acquaintances-to-dating. But all of the storylines are fun, and I can see it as perfect for a rereader depending on what you've got going on in your life you'll gravitate towards a different character.
Lee, Nora, Jess, and Ryan are at a crossroads. As their junior year of high school ends, Jess is worried they won't remain as close as they've always been if they don't do something that keeps them intimately bound to each other. As a solution, she decides it'll be fun if they make each others New Year's Resolutions. The decision to do so turns out to have consequences greater than any of them expected.

I really liked this one. Mia Garcia wrote each character with such distinctive voices and personalities that it was clear she intimately understood the direction she wanted each of them to go.

While Jess, Nora, and Lee were the most well-developed characters, in my opinion--there were times when I might've forgotten about Ryan if not for the individually focused chapters--there was no way to tell the story of this group without including the presence of the others. Even when they weren't together, they were still connected (represented in the group messages they send to each other); that connection often allowed further insight into the personalities and thought processes of others in the group.

In other words, you were always learning something about Lee, Jess, Nora, and Ryan. Even if said knowledge arrived second-hand. This allowed greater clarity as to why how they ma y struggle with their particular resolution.

Since the story is told using alternating perspectives, with each character heading their own chapters, you're able to follow the journey each takes towards reaching the goals set for them.

Jess's evolution was the most riveting. At some point she begins to question the physical response she has to the stress she places on herself, but she's so determined to "wear the mask" she doesn't want to ask for help. The consequences of that decision play out in surprising and dangerous ways.

That said, Nora was my favorite. I felt she developed the most of the four and it was a pleasure to watch her metamorphosis. I think I inwardly cheered the loudest for her.

Garcia writes in an engaging manner and it was easy to like each of these characters.

A fun read with a lot of heart.

This book is much more suited to the teen crowd than adults. Some YA books have really great crossover appeal but this one, for me, seems like it will read much better from a teen's perspective than an adults. It was enjoyable enough for me as an adult but it wasn't great. So I'd recommend it much more to teens than adults. Especially those looking for books about friendships, getting ready for that next step after high school, diverse characters, and making difficult choices.

This book was really okay. I enjoyed reading but didn’t particularly love it. I thought the diversity was amazing and the characters were very interesting. I was also a big fan of the relationships in the book, both the friendships that had been strong for a long time and the new ones that developed throughout the book. Those were probably my favorite parts. But in terms of writing and story, it wasn’t great for me. The lessons happening during their year of resolutions were pretty obvious and in your face, at least for me. There was really nothing subtle about them. I liked them, especially the discussions on their futures and their mental health. But really, so much of it seemed obvious from the get go. And maybe that’s because I’m an adult reading about it, I certainly have a different perspective than a teen who’s going through the same situations. I’m sure the intended audience will see those moments differently. And that’s what it’s all really about. I think the characters and their relationships made up for that with me and I think teens will really like the idea of the story. So overall, I’d say it’s a good read for teens and an okay read for adults. But also, yay for diversity!!

I received an advanced ebook for free from the Publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I was impressed by the depth of emotion I felt while reading in each character's perspective. They all broke my heart, and I rooted for everybody. What a perfect, lovely book.
