Thrall Daniel Black Book 4 eBook E William Brown

I’ve awaited some books confidently, with eager anticipation, because the author had already proved his skills over a dozen or more volumes. I’ve awaited other books nervously, uncertain of their eventual quality, because the author was still relatively new to the storytelling trade, or was under pressures that might cause him to rush and release a slapdash tome.

I’ve awaited “Thrall” in both states, alternating irregularly between them.

“Thrall” is a larger tale than its predecessors. While protagonist and first-person narrator Daniel Black is still at the center, the surrounding cast is largely new. A character with a modest presence in “Extermination” rises to great prominence. Other characters from previous volumes participate, but in ways I could not have anticipated. New settings are visited; new forces are unleashed; new alliances are forged, and a couple of older ones are tested near to the point of dissolution.

There’s no denying the grandeur of E. William Brown’s vision. The greatest clash of arms ever imagined is about to erupt. Devices designed to imprison gods threaten the balance. Monsters abound, including some who wear human guises. Among the players circulate assassins armed with the cunning of millennia. A lone human wizard often seems too small to stand against the forces that swirl around him. But not everyone enmeshed in this test of fate is exactly what he seems...and that includes Daniel Black.

It works. Despite a couple of plot lacunae and one or two developments that deserved explanations they didn’t get, it works beautifully. It’s a thrill ride to challenge the visions of all the fantasists of history. And now I must wait for volume five. Damn and blast!

Thrall Daniel Black Book 4 eBook E William Brown Reviews

Cons Ended with a feeling of - "to be continued." It looks like the real battle of Asgard is beginning- but the book ended before we saw any of it!
Also, this story took a big diversion off the path early on, out of Kozalin. And, from the way it went I though I was finally going to get an answer to a question that has been bothering me since the last book, namely, "what was Brand doing in Skogheim," and "why did he take Prince Caspar." Daniel ran into him, and then never asked the obvious question!

Pros Funny, clever, and with a nice heist feel to it at the end. Reading about the "magnificent b*tch," (self titled) was wild, and then Daniel in disguise, in high heels! Ha! Not the most intricate plot, but, definitely intricate enough to hold me till the end. Also, I like the way that Alanna was developed. I thought her origin and history was very interesting. I had never heard anything about Bristlecones until now.

So, all in all, definitely worth the read. Hope the next book does not take three years!
When I heard about this book I pre-ordered immediately, hoping it would be as good as the third book. I stayed up until midnight so I could read it asap.
The first few chapters were a bit slow, and the story took a bit of time to get up to speed. Without giving away too many spoilers when things do pick up, it comes out of left field.

While it is a good read, and at this point anyone still reading is to far invested not to keep going, it needs that momentum from the last book to get over that first hill.

But once it does, hold on.

Looking forwards to book 5 already.
All you need to know is the book ends with a to be continued.... so now you have to wait a few years to see what the next possibly "to be continued" book. Very frustrating!! Ok book, but I felt it was a half measure, heck the ENTRIE BOOK WAS SET IN ASGARD! Not cool, yes Daniel was able to level up some to some serious power, but I felt the rest of the characters in the series we seriously neglected and the ending of the book doesn't nothing to bring any reunion or satisfaction to the story. So in all I waited TWO YEARS for a so so book! I've been let down and not sure I will continue to read the series. Very disappointed and the book was about 50 pages shorter then the previous book.
Pros This book continues the trademark humor and wit of it's characters, and throws in some new inventions (more on that later) to keep people interested. Additionally we get to see a glimpse of what Daniel might be cooking up to get himself prepared to fight with gods, though that part ends on more of a cliffhanger by the end. A minor character from Extermination gets a very big role in Thrall, and fro the most part I really enjoyed the new dynamic between them and Daniel. Also we get to see some returning characters who get some more screen time, as well as answering a few questions from the last book. I finished the book within a few days which should tell you how much I enjoyed it.

Cons While I enjoyed some of the new settings and characters, the plot lines and characters from previous books are quickly set aside in this installment. It isn't long before Daniel leaves Kozalin behind, with the author being in favor of new horizons. For the most part this works, and the story it tells is interesting enough to keep my attention and interest. At the same time it is a little disappointing to see hints of how Daniel might have expanded his forces, and the new wonders he may have introduced. To be fair there are one or two things that are made at the beginning of the book, but the process that it takes is not as in depth as it has been in the past. It isn't "This is how Daniel figured it out and how he made it" but rather "Daniel did this". It could be my personal preference, but I liked to read how he solved and built things.

Overall this is still very much worth a read, but be prepared to take a new adventure in a new place with new people. If you are hoping of more of a continuation of past characters and plots it looks like you will have to wait until the next book.
